How do I know what weight capacity I need?
Match the lift to your heaviest realistic vehicle, not your average one, and never plan to run it near its rated maximum on a regular basis. Every manufacturer we carry advises upgrading to a heavier-capacity model if you're consistently exceeding around 90% of a lift's rated capacity. Weight distribution matters too. A two post lift rated at 10,000 lbs. splits that load across four arms, so each arm carries roughly a quarter of the total, and overloading a single arm is a real risk with heavier or unevenly balanced vehicles.
Is ALI certification actually important, or is it just marketing?
It's the one certification that matters. The Automotive Lift Institute (ALI) is the only recognized authority for lift quality and safety standards in this industry, with independent lab testing performed through ETL. Some manufacturers advertise CE or ANSI certification instead, which sounds similar but isn't the same standard, and it's often a sign the lift didn't meet ALI requirements. Check for ALI certification specifically before buying from any distributor, not just a certification claim at face value.
What concrete requirements does my garage floor need to meet?
Requirements vary by lift model, so the specific figures come from that lift's owner's manual, but the safety principle is the same across every car lift: the slab has to be structurally sound. That means no soft spots, cracking, or proximity to expansion joints, and no more than about 3% slope. Installing into a slab that doesn't meet spec isn't just a warranty issue, it's a real safety hazard, so confirm your floor against the manual before the lift arrives rather than after.
Does a car lift need to be professionally installed, or can I do it myself?
Either works. Full instructions and hardware are included if you'd rather install it yourself, with phone support available if you get stuck. If you'd prefer not to, we have access to a nationwide network of certified installers and can coordinate that arrangement for you. Installation pricing typically doesn't cover permanent electrical work, running air lines, or extra labor from access issues, so ask what's included before committing to a quote.
How much ceiling height do I actually need?
For storage or parking lifts, add the height of both vehicles (the one on top and the one on the bottom) plus 10 inches, and that's your minimum required clearance. For a lift you'll raise to full service height, add the vehicle's height to the runway height at maximum lift instead. This formula gets you close, but always verify against your specific model's owner's manual before finalizing your installation plan.
What should I watch for when comparing car lift prices between distributors?
Compare total cost, not just the sticker price. Some distributors advertise a lower number and then add shipping charges, warranty part fees, or leave out features like a premium power unit that come standard elsewhere. Ask directly what's included, and check how long the company has actually been selling the product line and whether the lift is genuinely ALI-certified, since a distributor with decades of experience and certified models will typically resolve warranty claims faster than one that's newer to the brand or cutting corners on certification.
